Air France - Afrique Occidentale - Small
Air France - Afrique Occidentale - Small
(31cm x 50cm)
This colorful design features the profile of an African person wearing a round gold earring with the Air France Pegasus logo, which after careful design is at the center of the poster. In the foreground, the artist, Vincent Guerra, had incorporated an image of two African natives grinding corn in a mortar, which is a traditional way to make local food. Overhead a plane is flying over and possibly about to land nearby. The color theme is consistent with the Pan-African colors of green, gold, and red, and this poster is part of Air France’s campaign to promote its international routes, including Africa.
Air France was formed on 7 October 1933, from a merger of Air Orient, Air Union, Compagnie Générale Aéropostale, Compagnie Internationale de Navigation Aérienne (CIDNA) and Société Générale des Transports Aériens (SGTA). Among these airlines, SGTA was the first commercial airline company in France, having been founded as Lignes Aériennes Farman in 1919. At the time when Air France was formed, the constituent members of Air France had already built extensive networks across Europe, to French colonies in North Africa and farther afield. During World War II, Air France moved its operations to Casablanca (Morocco). As of 2013 Air France serves 36 destinations in France and operates worldwide scheduled passenger and cargo services to 168 destinations in 78 countries. It served as France's primary national flag carrier for seven decades prior to its 2003 merger with KLM.
Posters have always been essential to Air France’s communications. It has one of the greatest collections in the world with over 1500 posters created by the most famous illustrators. Air France posters are usually striking, with few words, and depict destinations as dream-like and air travel as making dreams come true. Vincent Guerra was a French painting artist, who created a lot of stunning Air France posters after WWII.

If there's anything you want to know about posters, vintage or more modern, there's nothing Mr Ross doesn't know. His open and friendly manner helps one to choose the most suitable material whether for decoration, investment or whatever... I can't recommend him highly enough.

Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
