On July 29, 1955 America announced its intention to launch a satellite into space for the first time. Four days later, the former Soviet Union said it would do the same and what is now known as the "Space Race" began. This charming 1958 Bitter Campari poster is a direct commentary on this Cold War era battle for the stars. The fearless bottle of Campari outpaces a satellite orbiting the Earth in the night sky. We are told in Italian, "after the Earth...the stars"; a nod to Campari's dominance in the global liquor market. It is a clever image with wonderful historical context.

Gaspar Campari first produced Bitter Campari in 1860 in Novara, Italy. The liquor falls under the category of "Bitters," which is traditionally prepared as a mixture of water, alcohol, and botanical extracts, in this case, an orange peel. Bitters were originally developed as patent medicines, but are now used as digestifs. The drink is colored with carmine dye that gives the drink its unique red coloring.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
