This exceptional original vintage poster for Cognac Martell showcases Jean D’Ylen’s signature ability to create bold, eye-catching imagery using deep contrasts and dramatic movement. Three allegorical figures swirl upward against a rich midnight-blue background, forming a celestial tableau that draws the viewer’s focus to the centrally placed bottle of Martell. The stars above and the globe below reinforce the theme of Martell’s prestige and worldwide reach, all delivered through D’Ylen’s confident brushwork and dynamic composition.Jean Paul Beguin, better known as Jean D’Ylen (1886–1938), created many advertisements in this popular style, using stunning primary colors and strong graphic contrasts. The influence of Leonetto Cappiello is especially evident in his dark backgrounds and in the flowing, floating stance of his charismatic figures. After beginning his career as a jewelry designer, D’Ylen moved into advertising illustration for the Paris publisher Vercasson, where he rose to prominence after Cappiello left the firm in 1916. D’Ylen became known for combining humor, clarity of message, and exceptional color work to produce some of the most sought-after advertising posters of the 1920s and 1930s.Cognac Martell is one of the oldest and most respected cognac houses in France.
