In this Columbia Calls poster, Columbia, the personification of the United States, is seen standing atop the United States while holding a billowing American flag and sword at her either side. On the left-hand portion of the poster is a poem titled Columbia Calls, created by American artist Frances Adams Halstead which calls on American citizens to join the War Effort. The Columbia Calls poster was utilized to recruit citizens to participate in the war and this specific poster appears on at least two official recruiting posters for the United States Army from the period.

Born in Naples, Italy and raised in New York, Vincent Aderente (1880 – 1941) attended the Art Student League and went on to become a well-known Muralist. Aderente is best known for his First World War propaganda posters, work on the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel Ballroom and his assistant position to well-known American Muralist Edwin Blashfield. Aderente’s work can be viewed at St. Matthew's Cathedral, the Denver Mint, the Detroit Public Library and the United States Post Office in Flushing, Queens. (Wikipedia)
