Glenn Curtiss was an aviation pioneer, manufacturer of airplanes, and most importantly the founder of the Curtiss School of Aviation. Founded in 1910, the School grew to over ten location throughout America and made learning to fly a more accessible pastime. In fact, it was the Curtiss School that trained the first African American, Asian American and female pilots. As America leaned towards entrance into WWI, the School was also used to train U.S. Navy pilots and we can see the cross-section of pedestrian and military trainees in this wonderfully illustrated image. A JN14 'Jennie' takes off overhead, and the Curtiss NP-4 Flying Boat can be seen in the distance. The NP-4 would gain wider recognition in a few years time, when it became the first plane to cross the Atlantic in 1919.

The bottom section of this poster was left blank to be used by all locations of the school; the space would be filled in with details about both the location and training schedule as need arose.

Elmer William Pirson (1888-1935) was an American illustrator who predominantly worked in the field of magazine cover illustration and commissioned portraits paintings.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
