This poster is one of a series completed for SNCF advertising rail travel to different regions of France during the 1950s. In this charming and vibrant poster for Alsace by Abel, a beautiful sunrise can be seen amongst the traditional half-timbered architecture of Alsace. In the right of the poster, peering out of the window and enjoying the sun we see an Alsatian woman wearing the region’s traditional black headdress, a staple of Alsatian culture. The poster beautifully reflects the appeal of Alsace through its bright colors and warm atmosphere.

Alsace is a region in France bordering both Germany and Switzerland. Alternating control over the years from Germany and France, the region is known for its mix of culture. Alsace holds close to its Germanic influences which can be seen through its architecture, food and dialect. Although, Alsace is understood by many as "not entirely German" and "not entirely French."

The SNCF is the Societe Nationale de Chemin de Fer - The National Rail Service. Throughout the years, they have commissioned prominent artists to depict well known destinations in France, thereby encouraging train travel by the French as well as by visitors.

Abel was an artist that created many posters for SNCF during the late 1940’s through the 1950’s. Unfortunately, there is little information on the artist.

This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition.
