Dunkerque - Broders
Dunkerque - Broders
(61cm x 99cm)
The Dunkerque poster by Broders has all the quintessential elements of a successful travel poster. In Broders’ typical Art Deco style, the poster carries a calming and romantic seaside theme as a captain and an elegant woman dressed in white look out onto a glimmering harbor. Off in the distance, we see the city-side under a bright blue sky and a ship calmly approaching the shore. The poster was commissioned by the Chemin De Fer Du Nord, or French Northern Railroad to entice French tourists and natives to visit Dunkerque.
Dunkerque, or interchangeably, Dunkirk, is the northernmost city in France, just 6 miles (10 kilometers) from the Belgian border. Dunkerque boasts the third-largest harbor in France and holds a population of over 90,000 residents.
Roger Broders (1883-1953) was a French posterist and illustrator working in the early twentieth century. He is well known for his many travel posters, which feature scenic regions of France. He developed a simple design format that showcased the location with bold colors and minimal text. He often traveled to the locations he pictured via his sponsor, P.L.M. railways. Broders' relationship with P.L.M. began through a connection with his wife, which would prove fortuitous for the artist. Although his posters are well known and highly sought after, he produced less than 100 designs in his life which makes most of his works very rare.
Over and above the beauty of the Dunkerque poster by Roger Broders, the demand of the image has grown to those who are familiar with the book Voyages: Les Affiches de Roger Broders issued in 1991 where Dunkerque appears on the dust jacket. This publication has been out of print for over 20 years.

If there's anything you want to know about posters, vintage or more modern, there's nothing Mr Ross doesn't know. His open and friendly manner helps one to choose the most suitable material whether for decoration, investment or whatever... I can't recommend him highly enough.

Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
