Fly TWA to France - Dress Form
Fly TWA to France - Dress Form
(64cm x 100cm)
France is seen by many, including the artist of this poster, as the fashion capital of the world. Here, a custom couture outfit is in mid-construction on a dress form, while other symbols of France surround it. A Douglas DC-6 soars in the background.
TWA (Trans World Airlines) was formed in 1924 as Transcontinental & Western Air. The airline's first route was New York to Los Angeles, soon followed by multiple National routes. The airline expanded to serve Europe, the Middle East and Asia after WWII when the company was under the control of Howard Hughes, owner from 1939 until 1961. Hughes was a dominant force in expanding and promoting the routes flown by his company. The economy was vastly improving, and travels through air for business and pleasure increased too. Posters were a key element to promoting this form of travel and TWA. The airline started a decline in the 1970s that ended up in a third bankruptcy that caused their acquisition by American Airlines in 2001. The airline operated in 132 destinations worldwide and had a fleet size of 190.
Simon Greco (1917-2005) also known as S. Greco was an Italian American illustrator and painter. Growing up in St. Louis, Greco’s interest in art came about spending time at the St. Louis Public Library. In the 1920’s Greco ventured off to New York to pursue a career in commercial illustration where he worked for Life Magazine, The World We Live In and The Epic Of Man. At the start of the 1950’s, Greco wanted to move in a different direction with his art, and pursued painting in a magical realist style. Greco’s works can be viewed in the Smithsonian, the American Museum of Natural History and at the U.S. Naval Academy.

If there's anything you want to know about posters, vintage or more modern, there's nothing Mr Ross doesn't know. His open and friendly manner helps one to choose the most suitable material whether for decoration, investment or whatever... I can't recommend him highly enough.

Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
