Created in 1942 during World War II, this American wartime production poster features a dramatic photograph by Valentino Sarra. An American soldier, carrying a wounded comrade from the battlefield, looks directly toward the viewer beneath the urgent message, “Give ’em the stuff to fight with…” The image connected American factory workers and civilians on the home front directly with the soldiers who depended upon their production.Issued by the U.S. Office of Facts and Figures and printed by the U.S. Government Printing Office, the poster was part of the enormous wartime effort to increase American industrial production. The small format of approximately 7 x 10 inches was an officially issued 1/8-size version, intended for display in locations where the larger government posters were impractical. The printing information at the bottom identifies GPO Jacket No. 461576.Valentino Sarra (1903–1982) was an Italian-born American photographer and filmmaker known for commercial, industrial, and documentary photography. During World War II, his photographic work was used for government information and propaganda campaigns.
