Created in 1942 during World War II, this American production poster was designed by John Falter to encourage workers on the home front to support the war effort. Two American soldiers crouch in a foxhole and urgently reach toward a rifle being handed to them. Above the scene appears the direct appeal, “Give ’em the stuff to fight with…” while the bold message “WORK FOR FREEDOM!” reinforces the connection between American industrial production and the soldiers fighting overseas.Issued by the U.S. Office of Facts and Figures and printed by the U.S. Government Printing Office, the poster was part of a nationwide campaign encouraging increased production of weapons, equipment, and supplies. This approximately 7 x 10 inch format was an officially produced small-format version of the design, intended for display in factories, workplaces, offices, and other locations where the larger poster would have been impractical. The printing information along the bottom identifies GPO Jacket No. 453121.John Philip Falter (1910–1982) was an American illustrator best known for his long association with The Saturday Evening Post, for which he created more than 120 covers. During World War II, Falter served in the U.S. Navy and produced numerous recruiting and wartime propaganda images.
