This poster depicts the relaxed, Mediterranean lifestyle of the French Riviera. Palm trees sway in the wind, with a beach resort in the background. People are noticeably absent from this composition, lending a calm and blissfully quiet feeling to the image. This poster was created c1925 by an unknown artist for the PLM train line. We are told that roundtrip tickets are valid for 40 days; the implication is that in a location so calm and beautiful as the Cote d'Azur, you may end up extending your vacation a few days.
The Cote D'Azur is part of a southern region of France known as Provence, and includes the major cities of Cannes, Nice, and Marseille. A popular tourist destination, the Cote D'Azur or "Golden Coast" features a warm climate and relaxing atmosphere. The area was developed as a resort region in the mid-19th Century and has attracted the wealthy upper class from across Europe and Russia ever since. Cote D'Azur is known for yachting, casinos, and beaches.
This poster was created for the French Railway P.L.M. – Paris, Lyon, Mediterranee. These three train hubs were the main departure points for rail travel in France during the 1920’s and into the 1930’s. PLM importantly connected the busy cities with the bucolic coastline of the French Riviera.
