Maitres De L'Affiche - Pl 3 Daly's Theatre An Artist's Model

Maîtres de l'Affiche (Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 color lithographic plates used to create an art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller 11 x 15 inch format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art and distributed between 1895 – 1900. The varied selection of prints were sold in packages of four and delivered monthly to subscribers. Designed for a subscription audience it showcased the most influential posters of the era in a collectible small format. In this design, the British artist Julius Mendes Price ( 1857-1924) is trying to promote an operetta to be performed at London’s famous Daly’s theatre. It is titled, The Artist’s Model, and Price cleverly combines the use of the palette to cover the presumably undressed model of the title. It is an eye catching design that draws in the viewer. Julius Mendes Price was an artist, war correspondent, explorer, traveler, journalist and caricaturist for Vanity Fair. Several of his newspaper serial reports were later published in book form.
