Maîtres de l'Affiche (Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 color lithographic plates used to create an art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller 11 x 15 inch format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art and distributed between 1895 and 1900. The varied selection of prints were sold in packages of four and delivered monthly to subscribers. Designed for a subscription audience it showcased the most influential posters of the era in a collectible small format.

This poster was originally created for a third annual art competition and exhibition in Barcelona, hosted by the city council. Barcelona has long been a hub for the arts, and was also a hotbed of anarchist aggression at this time. During the period of this arts festival there was a bombing nearby, referred to as the "1896 Barcelona Corpus Christi procession bombing". This poster was created by Alexandre de Requer (1856-1920), a Catalan member of high society who studied in France. de Requer was a member of the pre-Raphaelite movement, an artistic style noted for its naturalistic attention to detail and light. He returned to Barcelona in the 1880s and worked commercially to support his very large family (he had nine children!).

This is an original vintage print, not a reproduction. This poster is on heavyweight paper, and is in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.
