Menthe Pastille - Oge'
Menthe Pastille - Oge'
(199cm x 128cm)
Menthe Pastille by Oge is a 1904 French liquor advertisement by Eugene Oge (1861-1936) for Giffard Distilleries in Angers, France. The mint flavored liquor, La Menthe- Pastille, was first produced in 1885 by pharmacist, Emile Giffard and still exists today.
Eugene Oge was an accomplished poster artist and caricaturist at the turn of the century. The scene presented in this poster is that of major world leaders of the time reaching reconciliations with one another over drinks of La Menthe- Pastille. The main text reads "At the tribunal of the Hague, La Menthe Pastille fascinated the world!"
Each of the world leaders are positioned with their political rivals revealing several comedic situations. The world leaders depicted from the left hand side include: Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany, Emperor Mutsuhito (Meiji) of Japan, French President Emile Loubet, Russian Emperor Nicholas II, Pope Pius X, Italian King Victor Emmanuel III, King Edward VII of England, and the sugar magnate Jacques Lebaudy- the self-appointed Emperor of the Sahara. Above them, King Leopold II of Belgium admires a playbill featuring the dancing superstar, Cleo de Merode. Towards the right of the piece sits the young King Alfonso XIII of Spain, and below him is Uncle Sam feeding La Menthe-Pastille to an infant African American.
This image of a Post-Civil War Uncle Sam sitting atop a shipping-container has a note which reads, "Thanks to La Menthe Pastille My States Are United." This scene represents how many Europeans viewed race relations in America during the turn of the century.

If there's anything you want to know about posters, vintage or more modern, there's nothing Mr Ross doesn't know. His open and friendly manner helps one to choose the most suitable material whether for decoration, investment or whatever... I can't recommend him highly enough.

Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
