No Le Preocupa Nuestro Problema - Maquette

This is actually not a poster, but a unique painting created as a proposal for a poster that was never made. Referred to in French as a "maquette", this painting is an interesting image addressing Spanish neutrality in WWII. An everyday Spaniard enjoys a smoke and a drink while a German plane drops a bomb, the text translating to, "Not concerned about our problem?". Truly one of a kind, we have not been able to confirm the artist or exact date of this important part of history. It appears to be acrylic or gouache paint on newsprint, which has been archivally backed onto linen.

During World War II, Spain, under the authoritarian rule of Francisco Franco, maintained a policy of official neutrality, though it was sympathetic to the Axis powers, particularly Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. While Spain did not formally enter the war, Franco provided limited support to the Axis, such as allowing Spanish volunteers (the Blue Division) to fight alongside the Germans on the Eastern Front. However, Spain also sought to avoid direct involvement to protect its own post-Civil War stability. The general population, still reeling from the devastation of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), was largely indifferent or war-weary, with many preferring peace and avoiding further conflict. Public opinion was divided: some supported Franco’s alignment with fascist regimes, while others were more critical of his policies, desiring a more neutral or even pro-Allied stance. Despite Franco’s alliance with Hitler and Mussolini, the Spanish people generally hoped for a quick end to the war and were focused on rebuilding their country rather than engaging in global conflict.
