Ombres Parisiennes means "Parisian Shadow." It was a type of theater performance that travelers to Asia brought back to France in the mid-eighteenth century. Finding popularity beginning in the 1880s, a shows used up to twenty assistants and a large backlit performance area to create dramatic shadows and effects. Performers of the day staged productions around the Montmartre area. This is one of the earliest shadow play posters.
