Can’t you just hear the theme music to James Bond when looking at this poster? James Bond films often use the theme of looking down the barrel of a gun in their opening sequences. That device is clearly being referenced in this great poster created for Pan American Airlines for travel to Japan. The 1967 James Bond film You Only Live Twice was set primarily in Japan, so it is very likely this poster was done in conjunction with the release of the film.

Pan Am (Pan American Airlines, or PAA) was founded in 1927 by Henry H. "Hap" Arnold, Carl A. Spaatz, and John H. Jouett. The company rose to prominence by opening new travel routes to South America, and securing the support of Charles Lindbergh to help establish landing rights to many exotic locales. Pan Am was always considered a trendy airline, where the stewardesses wore designer outfits. Iconically, the Beatles flew Pan Am when they first arrived in the United States. More recently, Pan Am played a large part in the 2002 Stephen Speilberg film Catch Me If You Can. Pan Am ceased operation in 1991, but is still referenced as an important part of the look and feel of the Mad Men era of traveling.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.
