The landmark spires of St. Basil the Blessed in Moscow's Red Square are all the information we need to know this is a poster promoting travel to Russia with Pan Am. The church dates to the 1550s, when it was commissioned by Ivan the Terrible, and is known throughout the world for its important and unusual domed structure. There is a disputed legend that the architect was blinded after completing his work on the church, so he could never replicate the beauty elsewhere. It is poignant to note that the American artist of this poster chose to only feature St. Basil's, and not the many other symbols of Soviet Russia present in Red Square (most notably the Kremlin). Unfortunately, we are not able to attribute this poster to a specific artist.

Pan Am (Pan American Airlines, or PAA) was founded in 1927 by Henry H. "Hap" Arnold, Carl A. Spaatz, and John H. Jouett. The company rose to prominence by opening new travel routes to South America, and securing the support of Charles Lindbergh to help establish landing rights to many exotic locales. Pan Am was always considered a trendy airline, where the stewardesses wore designer outfits. Iconically, the Beatles flew Pan Am when they first arrived in the United States. More recently, Pan Am played a large part in the 2002 Stephen Speilberg film Catch Me If You Can. Pan Am ceased operation in 1991, but is still referenced as an important part of the look and feel of the Mad Men era of traveling.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.
