The Battle of Bataan was one of the most integral in WWII. It was a direct result of the Japanese invasion of the Philippines following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, when the US Army under General MacArthur consolidated in retreat to the Bataan Peninsula. From there, a three month battle was waged where America tried desperately to hold onto its last position in the South Pacific. The battle ended in defeat, with a surrender of 76,000 American and Filippino soldiers, but the resources it forced the Japanese to use ended up turning the tide in the region towards the side of the Allies. Pictured in this poster is not a random soldier, but a specific hero from the Battle.

Second Lieutenant Alexander Nininger, a platoon leader of the 57th Infantry Division is shown here solemnly looking at us, helmet in hand. On January 12, 1942, Nininger sacrificed himself for his men when he forced his way into a Japanese fox hole with hand grenades and a rifle. His unit was able to retake a significant part of battlefield, helping to extend the fight and use up more Japanese resources.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
