This striking 1938 Art Deco travel poster by Italian artist Filippo Romoli (1901–1969) captures the elegance and allure of Abbazia (now Opatija, Croatia), a premier Adriatic resort during the interwar period. Commissioned by the Italian State Railways (Ferrovie dello Stato), the lithograph was printed by Barabino & Graeve in Genoa, promoting rail travel to this coastal destination.
Romoli, renowned for his sophisticated visual style, presents a glamorous scene: a fashionable woman in a white swimsuit stands confidently, while another, adorned in a patterned headscarf, enjoys a drive along the coast. The composition, characterized by bold colors and stylized forms, exemplifies the Art Deco movement's emphasis on modernity and luxury.
Filippo Romoli was a prominent Italian illustrator and poster artist known for his distinctive Art Deco style and contributions to tourism and advertising. Born in Savona, Italy, Romoli moved to Genoa in 1919, where he began his career as a technical draftsman. In 1926, he joined the Barabino & Graeve Graphic Industries Company, marking the start of his journey in commercial art. Romoli's work encompassed a range of subjects, including travel destinations, cultural events, and industrial advertising.
Abbazia, with its mild climate and scenic beauty, was a favored retreat for European aristocracy and celebrities. This poster not only advertises a travel destination but also encapsulates the era's spirit of leisure and sophistication.
This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. It is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.
