This poster is one of a series of posters commissioned by Air France to show their routes around the world. In this image, the artist Vincent Guerra shows us timeless beauty of Paris, with an interesting reference to the ancient Normans that settled the city. Another variant of this poster says "...is teo thousand years old" below the "Paris". In the foreground is the famous Fontaine Saint-Michel, with the Eiffel Tower in the distance. Posters such as this one were usually distributed to travel agents around the world as promotional items. Note the Constellation propeller plane in the background.

Air France was formed on 7 October 1933, from a merger of Air Orient, Air Union, Compagnie Générale Aéropostale, Compagnie Internationale de Navigation Aérienne (CIDNA) and Société Générale des Transports Aériens (SGTA). Among these airlines, SGTA was the first commercial airline company in France, having been founded as Lignes Aériennes Farman in 1919. At the time when Air France was formed, the constituent members of Air France had already built extensive networks across Europe, to French colonies in North Africa and farther afield. During World War II, Air France moved its operations to Casablanca (Morocco). As of 2013 Air France serves 36 destinations in France and operates worldwide scheduled passenger and cargo services to 168 destinations in 78 countries. It served as France's primary national flag carrier for seven decades prior to its 2003 merger with KLM.

Posters have always been essential to Air France’s communications. It has one of the greatest collections in the world with over 1500 posters created by the most famous illustrators. Air France posters are usually striking, with few words, and depict destinations as dream-like and air travel as making dreams come true. Vincent Guerra was a French painting artist, who created a lot of stunning Air France posters after WWII.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.
