A car and bicycle, both made by Alcyon, win their races in this early automobile and cycling poster by Marcel Bloch. "Always the first to arrive" is the slogan here - and we can tell our racers have won by a long shot. They chat with one another, calm and collected, as the runners up begin to arrive. In the foreground, a man is posting an advertisement for Alcyon which reads in French, "With Alcyon Brand, breakdowns are unknown! Always on time for appointments, unbeatable in races."
Alcyon was founded in 1890 by Edmond Gentil as a bicycle company. Alcyon bicycles would go on to win 6 Tour de France races. The company expanded into motorcycle production in 1902, and finally into car manufacturing in 1906. Alycon was absorbed by Peugeot in 1954.
Marcel Bloch (1882-1966) was a French poster artist, illustrator, and painter. He is most well known for his poster of King Kong.
