Amer Picon Chaud

This striking Swiss advertising poster by Fontanet promotes Amer Picon Chaud, the warm version of the celebrated French bitters-based aperitif. The French text “Un bon grog! Prenez alors un Amer Picon Chaud” translates approximately as “A good hot toddy! Then have a hot Amer Picon.” Instructions printed along the bottom give the recipe: ⅓ Amer Picon, ⅔ boiling water and two pieces of sugar. The advertisement cleverly presents the familiar aperitif as a warming drink particularly suited to the Swiss market.Although Amer Picon was a French product, this poster was created for Switzerland, as indicated by the printer's credit Sonor S.A., Genève along the lower margin. Its French-language message was directed particularly toward consumers in French-speaking Switzerland.Noël Fontanet (1898–1982) was a Swiss graphic artist and poster designer associated with Geneva. His commercial work is characterized by bold colors, simplified forms, humor and strong graphic compositions designed for immediate visual impact. This Amer Picon design is an excellent example of his ability to combine an appealing human figure with a clear and memorable advertising message.Amer Picon was created in 1837 by Gaétan Picon (1809–1882).
