This poster design was commissioned by Abbott Labs, a medical products company that supplied the United States military forces in World War I and II. The text on the bottom of the poster reads "Published by Abbott Laboratories as a Contribution to the Treasury's Schools-At-War Program". This particular design emphasizes all citizens in the home front should bear their obligation to support the war effort by purchasing war bonds to help finance the war.

The artist, Lawrence Beall Smith (1909-1995) shows us a heartwarming scene of an infantryman returning home to his family. With so many of the nation’s young men fighting abroad, the theme of a family reunion was especially poignant. Smith was closely linked with Abbott Labs during the War; he was appointed as their war artist/correspondent in 1943. He spent three months on a US aircraft carrier, chronicling Abbott’s medical efficiencies.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
