Cycles Clement - Rooster is an early French advertisement from c.1900 for bicycles by Jean de Paleologue (1855-1942). Clement Cycles began as a repair shop and quickly became one of the leading French manufacturers of bicycles and later motor vehicle at the turn of the century. Clement commissioned many posters, some featured costuming that appear almost allegorical. In this image we see the stylish woman floating over the city of Paris with her lightweight Clement Cycle in one hand and her symbolic victor's wreath in the other. She also has the rooster on her head, which was the logo of the Clement Cycle Company. The bicycle is clearly so light in weight since the woman is not straining at all to lift it.

Jean de Paleologu (or Paleologue) was a Romanian poster artist active in the early 20th century, who was known as PAL per his signature. Pal was also an illustrator and painter who immigrated to the United States in 1900. His poster artwork specialized in cycle manufacturing and cycling events which often contained illustrations of beautiful women. In magazine advertising, his clients included Vanity Fair, Strand Magazine, New York Herald Tribune, Plume, Le Rire, and Frou Frou among others. His American work expanded to include ads and publicity for the auto, film and animation industries.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.
