Cycles Omnium - Capelli
Cycles Omnium - Capelli
(70cm x 99cm)
In the 1890s, an "omnium" was a bike race covering many laps around an arena. Even though that jargon was firmly entrenched in the public's mind of the period, you'd certainly never know that this bike's namesake came from grueling endurance tests vis-a-vis the serene placidity of this twilight family outing. Which, in all likelihood was precisely Capelli's point: If a bicycle was built tough enough for demanding athletic competition it was an ideal choice for reliable domestic use by a wealthy family. At the time that this poster was created c1905, the bicycle was starting to feel the oncoming competition that the automobile would become and many bicycle companies increased their advertising to maintain customer loyalty.

If there's anything you want to know about posters, vintage or more modern, there's nothing Mr Ross doesn't know. His open and friendly manner helps one to choose the most suitable material whether for decoration, investment or whatever... I can't recommend him highly enough.

Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
