In the 1950's intercontinental air travel was growing rapidly with the newer airplanes now able to carry passengers over longer distances. This amusing graphic very effectively lets the viewer know that Irish Air Lines is now flying from Boston to Shannon and then continuing to Dublin, Ireland. The passenger is clearly comfortable and "in good hands".
This clever image was designed by John Bainbridge (1919 - 1978). He was born in Sydney, Australia and pursued his art education in Australia. He was a talented artist whose work was shown in many exhibitions in Australia while he worked as the Art Director of the National Theatre in Melbourne. Just after the end of World War II, he immigrated to England and continued his career. His graphic design style is clearly influenced by Edward McKnight Kauffer who was a strong influence. Bainbridge went on to design many posters in the 1950's for the London Underground Authority.
