Created in 1926, this striking travel poster by Leonetto Cappiello promotes the fashionable seaside resort of La Baule-les-Pins on the Atlantic coast of Brittany, France. During the 1920s, La Baule was rapidly developing into one of France's premier vacation destinations, attracting affluent visitors with its expansive sandy beaches, pine forests, elegant villas, and mild climate. The poster's headline proudly proclaims the resort's "wonderful climate," wooded surroundings, and beautiful beach, highlighting the qualities that helped establish La Baule as one of Europe's most desirable coastal retreats. Rather than employing the dramatic black backgrounds that made many of his advertising posters famous, Cappiello adopted a lighter, more refined palette for this composition. Three elegantly dressed bathers enjoy a game on the beach while a large parasol and the tranquil sea create a sophisticated atmosphere of leisure and relaxation. The graceful movement of the figures and the clean, modern design perfectly capture the glamour and optimism of the French Riviera-inspired resort culture that flourished during the Art Deco period. Today, this poster is considered one of Cappiello's finest travel images and is considerably scarcer than many of his celebrated commercial advertisements.Leonetto Cappiello (1875–1942) was an Italian-born artist who spent most of his career in Paris and is widely regarded as the father of the modern advertising poster. Breaking away from the ornate Art Nouveau style of the late nineteenth century, Cappiello revolutionized poster design through the use of bold colors, striking imagery, and memorable compositions that immediately captured the viewer's attention. During a career spanning more than three decades, he created posters promoting products, travel destinations, and cultural events, many of which have become icons of twentieth-century graphic design. His work remains among the most sought-after in the field of original vintage posters.
