Dusk tinges the ski slopes a dreamy pink in this extremely rare poster created by the French railway, Chemin de Fer d'Alsace et de Lorraine to promote travel to the Vosges ski resort region, Le Markstein. A stylish skier, beret jauntily aside her head, takes in the the gorgeous view of hilly Vosges, a rural region of northeastern France. Le Markstein resort can be seen in the distance, and the slopes are quiet and uncrowded, leading to a sense of calm as the day of skiing comes to a close.

Although this image has long been a darling of the rare ski poster world, there is interestingly very little known about the artist of this piece. Even his name is debatable; some interpret it as "Chauffard", while other scholars attribute it to "Choucard".

The Art Deco movement was an offshoot of the groundbreaking 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts. Artists took inspiration from Russian, Persian and Oriental influences, as well as the streamlined stylings of Cubism.

This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition.
We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
