Maîtres de l'Affiche (Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 color lithographic plates used to create an art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller 11 x 15-inch format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art and distributed between 1895 – 1900. The varied selection of prints was sold in packages of four and delivered monthly to subscribers. Designed for a subscription audience, the publication showcased the most influential posters of the era in a collectible small format.
Armand Rassenfosse applies a sophisticated however, effective design to this poster which advertises brewery, Van Velson by depicting an elegant woman against a yellow backdrop, finishing a Grande Brassiere beer.
Armand Rassenfosse (1862-1934) was a mostly self-taught Belgian graphic artist, book illustrator and painter. His best-known work was set of illustrations for Charles Baudelaire’s Le Fleurs du Mal. Always interested in improving techniques, Rassenfosse developed a new recipe for a special ink for etching, an ink that can be dissolved to expose the metal of the plate. The formula, called "Ropsenfosse", was finalized in 1892.
