Maîtres de l'Affiche (Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 color lithographic plates used to create an art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller 11 x 15-inch format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art and distributed between 1895 – 1900. The varied selection of prints was sold in packages of four and delivered monthly to subscribers. Designed for a subscription audience, the publication showcased the most influential posters of the era in a collectible small format.

This poster, by the Beggarstaff brothers is a sheer example of the collaborative team’s minimal, yet effective style. The Kassama Corn Flour poster is a tri-colored poster that utilizes yellow, black and beige. In the center of the image, a silhouette of a woman is holding a basket against a striking yellow background.

William Nicholson (1872-1949) & James Pryde (1866-1941) otherwise known as The Beggarstaff brothers were pivotal English and Scottish graphic designers known for their successful and collaborative partnership in the production of many poster designs. The two were known for using of clear outlines with large areas of flat color. One of their works for the W.S. Hardy’s Company, produced for sale to collectors, is in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
