This poster, sponsored by the Ente Provinciale per Turismo (The provincial body for Tourism) in Italy features a dynamic art deco stylization with crisp colors. In the righthand side of the image, artist Mario Puppo illustrates one of Naples’ most notable historic sites, the Porta Capuana. The ancient city gate which was built in the 15th century appears smooth and inviting in Puppo’s illustration accompanied by a scenic mountain view in the background.

Mario Puppo (1905- 1977) was an Italian artist and graphic designer. Puppo designed many catalogs, leaflets, playbills and music scores throughout his career. Most notably however was Puppo’s creation of the annual calendar for Barilla in 1937 which demonstrates Puppo’s rigid art deco style and dynamism of volumes. In 1941, Puppo’s works were exhibited in Milan at the Advertising Graphics Show at the National Exhibition of the Fine Arts Syndicate.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
