A clever cartoon of a cute penguin shivering in the cold reminds the viewer to order coal in this 1944 WWII propaganda poster by Egmont Arens (1888-1966). The United States was preparing to enter the Second World War, and public service announcements were issued in a variety of art styles to communicate important messages to the public. Here, the concern for shortages of fuel urges the viewer to prepare for the upcoming winter.

Egmont Arens (1889 - 1966) was an American publisher, industrial designer and commercial artist who specialized in product packaging design. He briefly ran a book shop in Washington Square before entering the publishing business where he promoted modern artists such as, Alfred Stieglitz, Georgia O'Keeffe, Max Weber, and George Bellows among others. He served as art editor for Vanity Fair and other magazines in the 1920's. Arens founded a design company in 1935 and created advertising material for General Electric, Coca Cola, Anheuser-Busch to name a few. He was an artist of many talents, and created store floor plans, furniture models and innovative product designs. Some of his industrial design models are on display at the Museum of Modern Art and San Francisco Museum of Art.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
