Everything old is new again with the prudent message in this WWI poster for gasoline conservation. The bottom text reads, "keep this poster displayed where gas users can not fail to see it", underscoring the importance of gasoline in American life then and through today. While we aren't sure how gasoline was ever used "for washing", many of the advice in this poster is timely. The charming design of the border of this poster harkens to the Arts and Crafts Movement; note the cheeky drips of oil used to frame the bottom edge.

Ray Greenleaf (1877-1950) was an American illustrator who trained at the famed Art Student's League in New York City. He created many WWI posters for the U.S. Government, and also designed camouflage.
