The First Harlem Jazz Festival was held in 1978 as an offshoot of the famous 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, which celebrated Black American music and culture in the "Summer of Soul". It continues to this day as Harlem Week, a series of musical and theatrical events that celebrate the history and culture of Harlem. This poster highlights the incredibly iconic jazz clubs in Harlem: The Cotton Club, Small's Paradise, and Vincent's Place - none of which are still in business today. Look closely at this illustration to see many hidden details, such as a banjo player and crowds dancing in the streets.

Kamil Kubik (1930-2011) was a Czech-born artist who defected to the USA in 1948 and made NYC his home. He created many works featuring New York City events and landmarks, and was for many years the artist for the White House.
