This original 1961 travel poster, titled "The Orient is Hong Kong – British Crown Colony," was created by renowned Chinese-American watercolorist Dong Kingman. Commissioned by the Hong Kong Tourist Association, it is the first in a series of four posters designed to promote Hong Kong as a vibrant travel destination.
The artwork vividly captures the bustling energy of Pottinger Street in Central Hong Kong. Through his masterful use of watercolor, Kingman portrays a lively street scene filled with hawkers, rickshaws, and pedestrians navigating the steep stone steps, all set against a backdrop of colorful signage and colonial architecture. His distinctive style, characterized by bold brushstrokes and a harmonious blend of Eastern and Western artistic influences, brings the scene to life, inviting viewers to experience the dynamic culture of Hong Kong.
Dong Kingman (1911–2000) was a pivotal figure in 20th-century American art, celebrated for his contributions to the California Style watercolor movement. Born in Oakland, California, to Chinese immigrants, he spent his formative years in Hong Kong, where he developed a deep appreciation for both traditional Chinese art and Western techniques. After returning to the United States, Kingman gained national recognition for his urban landscapes and was awarded two Guggenheim Fellowships. His works are held in esteemed institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Beyond painting, Kingman also contributed to the film industry, creating background illustrations for movies like Flower Drum Song and 55 Days at Peking.
This poster not only serves as a captivating piece of art but also as a historical artifact, reflecting Hong Kong's cultural vibrancy during the early 1960s. It stands as a testament to Kingman's ability to encapsulate the spirit of a place through his unique artistic lens.

Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
