An elegant couple toasts one another in this high contrast poster for Veuve Amiot champagne, creator of "great sparkling wines". Falcucci, the artist of this poster employs the visual trick popularized by Lautrec of allowing the natural color of the poster's paper to become a major element in the design. Here, this paper color becomes the woman's dress, as well as her and her partner's skin tone. It is an effectively striking design.

Veuve Amiot is a French sparkling wine producer that has been in business since 1884. Veuve Amiot means "Widow of the Amiot" in French, and it was named after Elisa Amiot, who unexpectedly became a widow with four young children. Two years later, in 1884 she decided to take charge in her late husband’s wine trading company. With the help of her sons, she was able to quickly build the reputation of Veuve Amiot as a creator of high quality sparkling wines. Under the leadership of Elisa and her son Jules, who inherited the business after Elisa passed away, the company has developed to reach an international audience, and is still active over a hundred years later.

Robert Falcucci (1900 – 1988) was a French illustrator best known for his Monaco Grand Prix posters from 1930. Falcucci worked for the Renault car company from 1923- 1927 where he directed many advertising pages for Renault. Throughout his career, Falcucci was known for illustrating many automotive and travel posters. Falcucci’s style defines the figure in the poster using bright lines on a dark background, which works to accentuate the vibrance of colors. Falcucci’s work has appeared in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
